Bringing Antarctica to Life: Connect with Scientists at Sea
Onboard, guests will be able to engage directly with these scientists through lectures, informal conversations, and hands-on activities. By sharing the purpose and impact of their work, guest scientists help bring Antarctic science to life, offering guests a deeper, more immersive understanding of the region and showing how their work supports the protection of one of the planet’s most remote and fragile ecosystems.
Advancing Antarctic Science: Collaborating for Ocean and Wildlife Research
This season, we continue our collaboration with leading research institutions, including the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (UTAS/IMAS), whose scientists will monitor marine mammals and evaluate how science and education influence environmental ambassadorship. The California Ocean Alliance (COA) will focus on whale research, collecting drone footage and biopsy samples to support their studies. The Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) will work on recovering long-term underwater sound recorders deployed in previous seasons.
Citizen Science in Action: Partnering for Conservation at Sea
We also welcome back conservation organisations like ORCA, whose teams gather valuable marine mammal observations throughout the voyage. Returning projects include Exploring the Unseen, capturing underwater footage to identify fish spooning grounds, and Penguin Watch, which invites guests to contribute to long-term penguin monitoring efforts by helping identify and count penguins in images taken by time-lapse cameras placed throughout the Southern Ocean and Antarctic Peninsula in the zooniverse web platform.
With science cabins available on all voyages, HX is deepening its commitment to science at sea, expanding both the space and opportunity for impactful, research-led engagement. Each journey offers guests not just a spectacular adventure, but a chance to meaningfully connect with the science that’s helping safeguard Antarctica for future generations.
